General terms

  • VoIP technology uses the Internet to make phone calls. You need an existing internet connection, such as Fibre or LTE to make VoIP calls.
  • The Pure VoIP service is entirely dependent on the quality of the Internet connection you are using when making or receiving a phone call.
  • We only recommend connections that do not generally suffer from congestion or high latency, such as Fibre or Fixed LTE.
  • Other connectivity types, such as DSL, 3G, Wi-Fi or Mobile Data will work. However, we do NOT recommend relying on these connectivity types as they are prone to congestion and high latency which result in poor call quality.

  • Any unused monthly CallTime will roll over for 3 months.
  • All CallTime topups last for 30 days from purchase.

What is Pure VoIP?

Pure VoIP is an alternative telephone service that works off your existing Internet connection. It cuts out unnecessary landline costs and you only pay for the CallTime you use. Perfect for anyone with fixed or mobile Internet looking for a home telephone number that is flexible, affordable and easy-to-use.

How does it work?

Once you sign up for Pure VoIP service, we'll give you your own unique VoIP number. It works like a phone number, and you'll use it whenever you need to make and receive calls over the Internet.

What do I need in order to use Pure VoIP?
  • An uncongested Internet connection, such as Fibre to the Home (FTTH) or Fixed LTE.
  • A VoIP Phone or a Smartphone App like Zopier. Don’t have a VoIP phone? View our range of VoIP phones.
  • An active Pure VoIP service with a positive CallTime balance. View our Pure VoIP packages.
Do I need a VoIP phone?

We recommend that you make use of our VoIP-enabled phone, but there are other options available - such as mobile apps (like Zoiper) or your existing VoIP phone.

If you have an existing VoIP phone, it is important to note that we may not be able to support or assist you in the configuration of your current phone.

Do I have to use an Afrihost VoIP phone?

No. You can manually enter your Pure VoIP details into your existing VoIP handset. Just make sure you never give these details out to anyone, as this could compromise the security of your account.

How long will it take to get connected?

New VoIP numbers - works as soon as your device is delivered.

Porting an existing landline number - porting can take up to 10 working days to complete. Read more about porting in our Getting Connected section.

Porting

Can I keep my existing landline number?

Yes. Pure VoIP is a cloud-hosted service, which means you can take your number anywhere in the world. If you have Fibre or Fixed LTE, then you can cancel your existing landline rental and port your number to Pure VoIP.

Are there any costs involved with porting?

Yes, you will be charged a once-off admin fee of R99.00 when you port your existing number. Please note that this porting admin fee is non-refundable.

What numbers can be ported to Pure VoIP?

Only South African numbers that start with 01, 02, 03, 04 and 05 can be ported to Pure VoIP.

Mobile numbers (083, 072 and 061, etc) and 0800/0860 numbers CANNOT be ported.

What do I need to do to port my existing landline number to Pure VoIP?

Please email ALL the following documents to voip-port@afrihost.com

  1. Signed copy of the Porting Request Form (to be completed via ClientZone).
  2. A copy of your Identity Document.
  3. A paid and up-to-date statement from your landline provider.
  4. Proof of payment of your current landline account.

We’ll let you know via email once your port request has been accepted. Please note that once the request has been accepted, it can take up to 10 working days for your number to be moved over to Pure VoIP.

Can I port my existing landline number if I have an active DSL service on it?

Your DSL services will have to be cancelled if you want to port a landline number with an active DSL service on it. This means that you will no longer have DSL internet on that landline number.

We rather suggest you get a new VoIP number and keep your DSL services.

How long does it take to port a landline number?

It can take up to 10 working days to port your landline number to Pure VoIP.

Please note that your existing landline account needs to be settled or your number will not be released. During the signup process you’ll also have to complete an authorisation letter that allows your number to be released for use with a VoIP service.

What documentation is required to RICA my Afrihost VoIP number?

You'll need to upload a copy of your ID/Passport and Proof of Residence. Visit our RICA Information page for more information.

How long does the RICA process take?

It can take up to three business days. We’ll inform you as soon as your RICA application is approved, after which you can use your Afrihost VoIP service immediately.

What are the payment options?

You can purchase your VoIP service via debit order or credit card. All Pure VoIP packages are month-to-month.

What’s this all going to cost?

There's no monthly line or rental fees for Pure VoIP clients. You only pay for your CallTime on a monthly basis, that you can use to call other mobile and landline numbers.

Calls to any other Pure VoIP subscriber is FREE.

Please note that local and international call rates apply.

How much does it cost to call an 087 number?

The cost to call our 087 number is dependent on the network you are calling from.

For example, if it's a local call from a Telkom number to an 087 number they charge 67c per minute during office hours. We suggest you ask your service provider to supply you with their latest call rates.

Does it cost more to call an 087 number?

No, it does not cost extra to dial or for someone to call your own 087 number - it incurs the same cost as a normal landline.

  • All data calculations are based on an average of 1.3MB per minute. This relates to 13MB for a 10 minute VoIP call.
  • A Capped Pure LTE 30+30GB (R199pm) package was used for the data cost calculations. This relates to R0.003 per MB. Total average usage for a 10 minute VoIP call is then R0.03 for 13MB.

General Questions

Can I have multiple VoIP accounts registered to the same number?

You can register multiple VoIP accounts to the same number (so you can have multiple devices in your house). Same number or multiple extensions.

How many devices can I use my VoIP account on?

The VoIP account can be configured on a total of up to 6 devices which then allows for up to 6 concurrent calls inbound or outbound.

Does CallTime roll over?

Yes, any unused monthly CallTime will roll over for 3 months.

Any CallTime topup will last for 30 days from the date of purchase.

What type of Internet connection works best with Pure VoIP?

The Pure VoIP service is entirely dependent on the quality of the Internet connection you are using when making or receiving a phone call.
