Why Fibre
Is Better

Compared to other Internet Solutions

Fast and Reliable
Fibre uses optical cables to carry data via light, which makes it up to 50x faster than the fastest DSL available in South Africa. With the improved bandwidth throughput of Fibre you’ll have a much more stable connection, as well as lower latency. And, because Fibre uses light instead of electrical pulses, it is weather resistant and doesn't degrade over large distances, giving you a consistent, dependable experience.
Connect More Devices
We enjoy more and more connected devices in our homes every day, and normal DSL broadband struggles to support the increasing demand on your Internet Connection. With Fibre, you can connect more devices than ever before - which means that you can enjoy reliable, fast connectivity in every room of the house.
No Telkom Line Required
One of the awesome benefits of using Fibre is that you don’t need a Telkom landline to get connected. This means that you’ll save hundreds every month because you’re not paying for a phone line (which you probably don’t use anyway) just to connect to the internet. You also don’t have to worry about copper cable theft ever again!
On-Demand Entertainment
With Fibre, say goodbye to constant buffering, thanks to smooth, fast connectivity - allowing you to enjoy HD or 4K content, even if several people are streaming at the same time.* And with super-low latency, you can take gaming to a whole new level too.
* The ability to stream multiple content sources and the quality thereof is determinedby the speed of the connection you choose.

Which
Speed is

Right for Me?

We’ll give you some great examples to help you make the best choice.

Below are some general scenarios for Internet Usage. We suggest you run through all of them and pick the most relevant speed in each category based on how you’ll be using the internet. Also factor in that each service or device you use simultaneously would be sharing your fibre connection, so the more services and devices used, the higher your connection speed should be for the best experience.

After you make your selections we will suggest the speed applicable based on your answers to ensure you get the experience best suited to you.

Check Availability In Your Area

For Cloud Services that involve syncing data across devices, like backups or media, it is important to have a good upload speed. Please note that the above examples are estimations and can be affected by a number of variables. They should only be used as a guide. Getting Started

Your Step‑by‑Step Guide
to Getting Fibre

Fibre Availability
Fibre is still new and currently being rolled out across the country. So you may not have Fibre available in your area just yet. Use our Availability Map to find out if your area is Fibre ready and which providers are available.
Sign up with Afrihost
In true Afrihost style, we have several affordable, contract-free Fibre packages to choose from, and have multiple Fibre providers working with us to bring you Pure Internet Joy. Simply put in your address, and if you're covered, we'll take it from there and get you connected before you can say Blazing‑Fast Broadband!
Fibre Installation
There are a few basic steps to getting Fibre, which begins with availability in your neighbourhood, estate or complex. Once the provider has done this initial installation, the next step is to have a Fibre line brought into your home. Once you’ve signed up for Fibre with Afrihost, the relevant last-mile partner will be in touch to get the Fibre line installed to your premises, if that hasn’t already happened.
Pure Internet Joy
Once you’re all set up, just sit back and enjoy lightspeed internet with High Definition streaming, faster downloads, uninterrupted surfing, and gaming. You can even do this wirelessly across supported devices with our Dual-Band AC Wi-Fi Router, which provides excellent coverage, and operates on both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies for future-proof, cutting-edge connectivity!

Questions
and Answers
FAQs

How long will it take to get connected?

This will depend on the turnaround for your installation and activation. Once the line has been installed in your premises it can take up to 5 days for the provider to activate your line. As soon as your Fibre line is active, you can be connected to Pure Internet Joy from Afrihost within 24 Hours.

Each provider has a different lead time for installation and activation. If your line is already activated, you’ll be connected shortly after you sign up.

Is the price of the Fibre line included in the Afrihost Package price?

Yes – the price you see, is the price you pay! All Fibre Packages are bundled, so the price is for both your Data and the Line rental, all‑inclusive.

Will I have to pay a setup fee?

Sign up with Afrihost Fibre Today and you can save up to R4000! This overall amount of up to R4000 can be used to offset installation and hardware costs if you're new to Fibre, or if you aren't happy with your current ISP and want to experience Pure Internet Joy, we'll credit your Afrihost account to re-imburse you for costs incurred in making the switch!

Can I use my current DSL router?

Probably not, as Fibre works very differently to DSL. But you may, in some cases, be able to use your existing Wi‑Fi enabled router to spread your Fibre connection via Wi‑Fi. This will depend on which router you have and how the provider installs your Fibre.

Do I need a telephone line to use Fibre?

No! Fibre connects via optical cables that carry data via light, which are completely separate from the Telkom copper wire network.

How is Fibre different from DSL?

DSL is dependent on Telkom copper wire infrastructure, which is often unreliable and can be slow if you have a bad line or are far away from your local exchange, whereas Fibre transmits data with pulses of light over an optical cable.

These cables are far more reliable than copper wires and can offer much greater connectivity speeds.

What if I don’t have Fibre in my area?

If Fibre isn't available in your area yet, use the Availability Tool to give us your details and we'll let you know as soon as Fibre becomes available in your area.

Who can get Fibre?

Our Fibre packages are available to anyone in areas that have coverage from one of our Last‑Mile Fibre Partners. Some areas have multiple providers, resulting in more choice and flexibility for you.

Are your Fibre Packages shaped?

This will depend on the package you choose. Your experience will be determined by the grade of product you select. If you want an unshaped line you can purchase one of the Priority Packages.

Alternatively, our Premium Packages are semi‑shaped and the Home Packages can be subject to throttling. But remember, shaping only affects downloads and not real time services such as browsing, gaming, youtube, streaming etc. Also, shaping only happens in situations where the network might be congested.

The Small Print

General

  • Our Fibre Packages are subject to an Acceptable Use Policy
  • Fibre Packages are locked to a single location.
  • Performance is subject to contention. This means that data speeds and latency may be affected by factors outside of Afrihost’s control or demand for bandwidth at any given time.

Management

  • We deal with Last-Mile Fibre Providers on your behalf for all Fibre related issues.
  • We manage queries regarding any Fibre line faults.
  • We can upgrade or downgrade your Fibre line speed.

Bandwidth

  • Home Fibre Packages have a monthly threshold after which your speeds could be subject to throttling if the network is under strain. Premium and Priority Uncapped packages have no usage thresholds.

Shaping and Prioritisation

  • Home Uncapped packages are potentially subject to throttling should a user have reached their monthly threshold and our network is under strain.
  • Premium Uncapped packages are not subject to throttling or monthly thresholds, and will enjoy full speed real‑time services under all normal circumstances, but will be subject to the shaping of downloads when there is a high demand on the network.
  • Our intention is not to shape Priority Uncapped packages, however shaping can be applied during times of network congestion. When applied, only non‑realtime, non-interactive services will be affected by shaping, to offer the best possible experience to users when network resources are strained.
